How the HMRC mileage calculation works

HMRC lets you claim a flat rate per business mile driven in your own vehicle — called the Approved Mileage Allowance Payment (AMAP) rate. The rate varies by vehicle type, and for cars there are two tiers based on annual mileage.

Cars and vans

For the first 10,000 business miles in a tax year (6 April to 5 April): 55p per mile from 06-04-2026 (45p per mile before that date). For every mile above 10,000: 25p per mile.

The calculator above applies both rates automatically and splits your mileage at the threshold.

Motorcycles

A flat rate of 24p per mile with no threshold.

Bicycles

A flat rate of 20p per mile with no threshold.

Who can use this calculator?

This calculator is for UK taxpayers only. It applies to:

  • Sole traders — claiming mileage deduction on Self Assessment
  • Limited company directors — calculating the reimbursement from their company
  • Employees — estimating Mileage Allowance Relief if underpaid by their employer

This is an estimate — use MileageClaim for the real thing

This calculator gives you a one-off estimate based on a total miles figure. To claim correctly, you need a mileage log that records every individual journey — the date, business purpose, start and end locations, and miles. HMRC can ask to see this at any time.

MileageClaim tracks every journey throughout the year, automatically applies the correct HMRC rate including the threshold switch, and generates a structured PDF your accountant can use. It is free forever for UK sole traders and limited company directors.
